End-of-Year Reflection: The Key to Success (Not Just New Year's Resolutions)

The most successful people that I know do this one thing every year. When I say success, I'm not just talking about financial success or business growth, but success in all areas of life. That could be different for everyone, depending on what stage of life they're in. How are your relationships with your spouse or significant other? How are your relationships with your kids and with God? What's your business like? How are your personal finances? How's your health? These are important questions to consider, even if they're a bit stressful to think about.

Around this time of year, everyone is focused on making New Year's resolutions. But there's one thing that successful people do that we often overlook. The most successful people I know take time to reflect on the previous year. Wisdom isn't just about knowledge or experience; it's also about reflecting on what we've learned and experienced. You can be young and wise or old and not very wise at all. A lot of it comes down to whether or not we've taken the time to think about what happened and what went really well over the course of the year.

I'm grateful to be leading the team here at Business Builders and to help our clients achieve success in their businesses. But my real focus is on more than just business success. It's important to me for our team and our clients to have success in all areas of life. With that in mind, I wanted to share some tools to help you think about the new year.

One thing you can do is create a "life wheel" with categories such as rest, relaxation, relationships, personal finance, and rate them on a scale of zero to ten. Take time to reflect on how these areas have been over the past year. Ask yourself, "How did it go? What was the average?" Be honest with yourself about the areas that need improvement in the coming year. If you don't care about making a change, you probably won't follow through.

Another thing to consider is the idea of "taking account." This means looking back on the past year and being honest about what worked and what didn't. This isn't about dwelling on the past, but about learning from it and making a plan for the future.

As you head into the new year, take time to reflect on the past and set goals for the future. By doing this, you'll be setting yourself up for a successful and fulfilling year.
