If you own a business with a website, you need to read this.
A recent Action News Jax investigation revealed that a single Florida attorney has filed more than 200 ADA website lawsuits across the state — and at least 35 Jacksonville businesses have already been sued, including well-known restaurants like Cowford Chophouse, European Street Café, and Dockside Seafood Restaurant.
Jacques Klempf, owner of Cowford Chophouse, was blindsided by a federal lawsuit alleging his website wasn't accessible to visually impaired users. His attorneys told him he could fight it, but he'd likely lose because the ADA is federal law. He settled for roughly $20,000 — and he's far from alone.
The Numbers Are Staggering
Action News Jax and its sister stations analyzed tens of thousands of federal court filings and found:
- 15,332 ADA website lawsuits filed in the past four years
- Nearly 4,000 cases filed in 2025 alone
- 90% of those cases (3,567 out of 3,948) were brought by just 16 law firms
- A single plaintiff from Jacksonville is named in dozens of lawsuits statewide
The complaints cite similar issues every time: inaccessible menus, missing alt-text for images, or difficulty locating basic information like an address or phone number.
Why This Matters for Every Business Owner
Here's the uncomfortable truth: most business websites are not fully ADA compliant.
ADA website litigation attorney Gary Edinger, who has worked dozens of these cases, put it bluntly: "In my experience, I don't think there's a website in the universe that's compliant."
The websites being sued aren't broken or unusable. They often have what Edinger calls "hyper-technical defects" — things like missing image descriptions, unlabeled form fields, or navigation that doesn't work with screen readers. These are small issues that most sighted users would never notice, but they create real barriers for people who rely on assistive technology.
And right now, federal law doesn't define precise technical standards for website compliance under the ADA. That gray area is exactly what drives the litigation.
The "Accessibility Widget" Trap
Many businesses have tried to solve the problem with third-party accessibility widgets — tools like accessiBe that promise instant ADA compliance with a single line of code.
But in 2025, the Federal Trade Commission reached a $1 million settlement with accessiBe, alleging the company made deceptive claims about its product's effectiveness. The FTC found that the widget didn't actually make websites fully accessible as advertised.
A cheap overlay widget is not a substitute for real accessibility work. These tools can create a false sense of security — and they won't protect you from a lawsuit.
What Real ADA Compliance Looks Like
Genuine website accessibility requires a comprehensive approach:
- Automated scanning that continuously monitors your site for accessibility issues
- Alt-text on every image so screen readers can describe visual content
- Proper heading structure that allows keyboard-only navigation
- Labeled form fields so assistive technology can identify inputs
- Color contrast ratios that meet WCAG standards
- Ongoing monitoring — because every time you update your site, new issues can appear
This isn't a one-time fix. It requires ongoing attention, which is why a managed compliance solution makes the most sense for most businesses.

Don't Wait Until You Get Sued
With nearly 4,000 ADA website lawsuits filed in 2025 alone and the numbers growing, this isn't a matter of if your business could be targeted — it's a matter of when.
The cost of proactive compliance ($79–$629/month) is a fraction of what a single lawsuit settlement costs ($10,000–$20,000+ in attorney fees alone). Cowford Chophouse learned that the hard way.
