1. Who is this logo really for?
One of the most essential things you need to know in the logo design process is an understanding of who the logo’s audience will be. It should first and foremost appeal to your target market. Even though it is also important that the logo design appeals to you, the primary focus should be on who will be using your service/product. It can be easy to fall into the trap of believing that the logo needs a collective approval from your friends, family or even co-workers. This usually spells disaster for the final product, and complicates the process.
2. How will the logo be used?
You must also consider the applications for advertising when designing a logo. Will it mostly be used for social media/web, print or both? If the plan is to get your design up on a massive billboard for thousands of people to see when they speed by, then the design team needs to know this up front. Or, if you just want a super-cool icon for your Facebook profile, it helps to know those requirements up front.
3. Will your logo grab the right kind of attention?
Ever heard the expression, “just make it pop?” I have…almost on a daily basis. This typically means somebody wants their logo design to be more eye-catching, and there is definitely a correct way to achieve this. Make sure the updates stand out in content, color, style, etc., but in a tasteful manner that aligns with your company’s brand image. Steer clear of edits like changing the colors to be so bright that it melts your viewers’ eyeballs and screens. There is a fine line between getting folks’ attention and scaring them away.
4. Does it require various layout formats?
You have probably noticed that there are many different layouts and shapes a logo can take. Sometimes it is appropriate to have a text-only version of your logo, while other instances may call for a graphic icon to represent your brand. Refer back to #2 and how the logo will be used to best determine what your logo needs.
5. Best results are achieved by working as a team!
Many times we get a client who believes we are a group of magicians that can pull a spectacular logo out of a hat without any input or assistance from themselves. Building a great brand requires collaboration between the client and the design team, and above all, it calls for lots of patience. Try to provide your designer with as many details as you can in the beginning stages, and then continue to support the process by communicating things you like (or don’t like) until you strike gold.
